LESSON: Parts of the Sword

The sword is composed of a steel blade which should be customized in length to the height and reach of the fencer, a parrying shield and crossguard, grip, and pommel.

The blade is divided into two primary parts:

  • The strong which runs from the crossguard/shield halfway up the length of the blade.
  • The Weak which runs from the halfway point to the tip of the blade.

When holding the sword in the forehand position, the edge closest to you is the short edge, the one facing away is the long edge.

The shield is a feature found on blunted fencing swords, designed to help deflect an incoming blade away the fingers. The shield provides supplementary support to the sword's overall balance.
