Class Notes 10/30: Shiel Hau & Military Drills

HEMA Halloween Spook-tacular! This weekend we covered the Shiel Hau, and Messer Military Drills for the Zombie Apocalypse.

 Advanced Longsword Class

Schiel Hau
“Squinting” or the “Glancing” Stroke

“Set yourself in the ward of the Tag with the left foot in front. If someone cuts at you, then cut against it, but in the strike turn your short edge against his strike.”

“Gloss. Here notice and remember that the glancing cut comes down from your right side with the back edge. It goes to the left side, aslant or askew, while stepping out to the right side with turned sword and overturned hand.  This same cut counters everything that a buffalo (that is, a peasant) will cut down from above, as they often do, and also counters the same as the crosswise cut (as was described previously).” — 3227a
  • Module 1: Structured footwork review by focusing on the placement and angle of the feet.
  • Module 2: Application of Schiel Hau — review the foundations, application at variable distance, variable conditions.

Messer Class

Military Drills for the Zombie Apocalypse

In the spirit of the season, we dove into the more gruesome Military Academy Drills for the application of the Langes Messer. These drills are designed to help train reaction/responses to a variety of situations: Where to put your weight, how to hold your body, how to effectively counter an attack, and most importantly how to put an end to the exchange as quickly as possible. We got through six of the eight drills and will complete our survey in the not too distant future!
  1. Opponent(s) ahead.
  2. Opponent(s) to the right.
  3. Opponent(s) to the left.
  4. Opponent(s) behind.
  5. Many opponents ahead.
  6. Surrounded by opponents.

Thanks to everyone who came out to train this weekend! Shout out to visiting instructor Alex Xi from DSHF for joining our classes. The November schedule should be released soon, so don't forget to sign up at www.gemac.club!
